Mar 15, 2017 - I assume you're trying to format it on a MAC, probably the error is because it. Instead of selecting “My Passport”, selecting its parent “WD My. Therefore, if a WD my passport external hard drive is not recognized by Mac OS, but it is able to be compatible with Windows OS, you only need to format it to HFS+ file system which is able to be recognized by Mac OS.
I recently had to purchase a new MacBook Pro, and when I tried to get files off of my Passport for Mac external hard drive. I get an error stating 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.' And when I try to initalize, and verify disk, I get this message 'Partition map check failed because no slices were found.' I have already updated firmware for the external hard drive. One site I found stated that it could be that the USB port is not strong enough, and I would need a 2.0 Booster cable. Does anyone know if this would work?

It wont do the verify and repair. I get the error about the partition and no slices being found. I get same error for repair as well. Doesn't let me get any further. I'm really starting to worry that I won't recover all my photos from 10 years. I had just moved all my photos from Iphoto to the HD, because my old laptop didn't have enough space.and then it died.and now the HD dies. There's got to be something I can do. Can I have the data removed from HD by some other method to another HD?

I believe that's also said in the User Manual that came with your external. Look at page 6 under Optional Accessories. If that's the case, you're fortunate you didn't get a Retina MBP because there's only one USB port on each side and the optional cable couldn't reach both. Since it shows up in Disk Utility, does it list both a Media line and a volume line below it? With the Media line selected, at the bottom of the window do you see line saying 'Partition Map Scheme'?
Kmichiko wrote: I see a media line and the one below is an 'unmounted Partition', which is grayed out. It also still says on the media line that SMART is not supported, but it passed on the Western Digital Utility.
Any other ideas from here? The fact that a media scan could be accomplished when connected to your MBP suggests the external is getting enough power to spin the drive. SMART isn't supported via Disk Utility with a USB connection though WD has apparently found a way to read it with its own software none-the-less. When you click on the unmounted partition line, does anything appear at the bottom of the window next to Partition Map Scheme? And when that line is clicked, does the 'Mount' button at the top of the window become active? If it does, click it to mount the partition.

I am a MAC user. I am trying to access a backed up file on my WD Passport from another MAC computer (the WD, through time machine, updated a computer that recently fatally crashed). When I try to access my Desktop file from the 'Latest' backup it gives me the following message. 'The folder 'Desktop' can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.' I have tried to unlock and alter the permissions in the Info box for the file but no dice! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Welcome to the TH community, WarrencFry!
I'd recommend you to check how the WD My Passport would be recognized in the Mac where the backup was initiated. Another thing you could try is to on the Mac computer you are currently using. Hopefully, that will let you access your My Passport content. If it doesn't help, try re-installing the. Keep me posted with the troubleshooting & Good luck! SuperSophWD Thanks for the warm welcome and the help. Cause the original computer is dead I'm not sure how to check on how it was initiated.
On the disk permissions side there were no problems found with the WD device but it doesn't allow me to click Verify or Repair Disk Permissions. I tried re-installing the drives but no dice. Thank you again for your help.

Thank you again for your help. Hey there again, @WarrencFry! I'd suggest you find another Mac computer where you could connect the WD My Passport and check how it would get recognized! I'd also recommend you try taking the file ownership one more time through the Terminal. Here's on how to execute the procedure. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

SuperSophWD That did the trick! I plugged it into my colleagues Macbook Pro (same laptop as mine that died) and it worked fine. Thanks for the tip and all the help!
